Plot Line - Exposition - Lord of the Flies takes place around 1950 during WWII. We are introduced to a group of teenage boys who are stranded on an island on the Pacific Ocean. They were trying to escape Europe during a hard time. There plane was shot down and they landed on the island where they are forced to survive on the island. The book takes place on the island, and all the teenagers are the only ones there so they have to live and survive by themselves. As a reader we are introduced to Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy, Roger and Samneric who are the major characters in the book Lord of the Flies.
Rising Action - The boys on the island are called to vote on the leader of the island. They vote Ralph as the leader, and Jack is not happy. Ralph is a guy who wants the other guys on the island to build shelter, and to make a signal fire, so that they can get rescued. Jack is more focused on hunting, him and Ralph are to very different people. It is said that there is a beast on the island. Nobody knows if he is real or not. The boys on the island are scared that they will have to encounter him. The boys on the island support Ralph, but some support Jack, so on the island they form two different groups. Jack breaks off and forms a new tribe. Jack becomes a savage on the island.
- Jack tries to kill a pig, but he is hesitant and lets it get away
- The boys take Piggy's glasses and decide to use them for the signal fire.
- The boys see a dead parachutist falling from the sky.
- Robert is almost killed by the hunters while they do a replay of the hunt.
- Robert takes the stones and he starts to throw it at the litluns.
- The hunters decide to kill a sow, which they take its head and put it on a stake.
Climax - Robert comes to find The Lord of the Flies which is the name given to the sow that Jacks group kills and puts on the stake. Roger is faced to realize that the beast that everybody talks about is not a real human being. Roger finds out that the beast is something within everybody on the island. Roger tries to explain this to everybody on the, but they dp not believe him. They turn into savages and kill Roger. The boys on the island are becoming less civilized.
Falling action - The boys fall farther into savagery and they leave Piggy and Ralph by themselves. Roger pushed the boulder down the mountain and it strikes piggy and kills him. He drops the conch shell and it breaks into a million pieces. Ralph is forced to flee from Jack's group because of the savagery taking place. When Ralph leaves he finds the naval officer on the beach. He then speaks with him.
- The hunters beat up Ralph in the middle of the night.
- Samneric come to see if everything is all good and to see is Ralph is fine.
- Jack beats up Wilfred
- Jack sets the forest on fire because he is trying to get rid of Ralph.
Resolution - Ralph sees the naval officer, then the naval officer sees all the other boys on the stranded island. The naval officer assumes that these boys are having some fun. He finally comes to his senses and realizes that is not what is happening. He was horrified to see that the British boys had turned into savages. The boys are ashamed that savagery had got the better of them.
Characterization - Piggy - can best be described as a static character who keeps his ego during the book. Piggy is a smart, but thick - fat English boy. He complains a lot and is always whinning about different things. He is nothing like some other characters in this book. He represents ego because he is true to himself and does not become a savage like Jack. Piggy being smart helps the boys on the island. Him being able to start a signal fire with his glasses is an example of his intelligence.
Ralph - He is a static and Round character. He comes to represent ego and superego. At the beginning of the book he is voted leader of the island. He stays true to what he believes in for most of the book. He is always staying positive and making sure he does what he has to do to survive and get rescued. He builds a civilization and knows he should not become a savage. When he tries to kill the pig for the first time he does not kill it. Ralph does change and becomes some what of a savage. He helps with the killing of Simon. This shows how the beast is a person within everybody on the island. At the end of the book Ralph is ashamed of himself for falling into savagery.
Jack - He is a dynamic and round character. He is the leader of the hunters group. He starts off a normal kid but when he becomes leader he thinks he can control everybody. He is very barbaric and a savage. He represents savagery. He gets really mad when he losses to Ralph in the election. He falls in love with hunting and he paints his face to show that he is a barbaric hunter. He represents Id because he never thinks about being civilized , savagery is always on his mind.
Mood - The mood for me when reading this book is suspense. The whole book faces some major twists and turns. At the start of the book Ralph is voted leader and Jack gets very angry. I tthought that Jack and Ralph would fight, but instead the go for a calm swim. Who would have seen this coming? Another example of suspense in the book is when the hunters are chasing Ralph. When reading the book I thought for sure that they would kill him. The story takes a twists and the naval officer saves the day. Lord of the Flies is a very good book because it uses suspense to keep you wondering what will happen next.
Motiffs - The CONCH - The conch is something that reoccurs throughout the book. The conch is used to call meetings on the island. Whoever has the conch is the one who is able to speak. It represents order and civilization on the island. Once the conch breaks into a million pieces then all civilization is lost and savagery takes over.
Face Paint- This is also something that reoccurs during the book. The face paint is used by Jack when he goes hunting. It makes him feel more barbaric and like he has more power. The face paint represents savagery because once Jack wears it he is killing something and being a savage. It makes sense for Jack to wear it because he is the biggest savage on the island.
Themes - Becoming Adults- Once the plain crashes the boys on the island have to survive on their own with out and adults around. They have to do their jobs to make sure they will get rescued. Growing up is a big deal for the boys. Without becoming grown and more mature them they will soon die and won't have the chance of being saved.
Savagery v.s. Civilization - As the books starts all the boys on the island are ell behaved and normal boys. Once reality hits them that they are on a island stranded then things start to happen. They start to kill eachother, the pig is killed , and everybody thinks that the beast is a real person. Savagery takes over the island and civilization is lost. This shows how people will go crazy when trying to survive.
Nature of Good and Evil - When the book begins all the boys are well behaved. As time progresses they become savages and evil takes over. Simon realizes that the beast is not a real person, but that it is something within everybody on the island. Everybody basically goes from well behaved to a "beast". Savagery is the evil that takes over everybody on the island.
Tone - The tone in Lord of the Flies portrayed by William Golding is sadness, violence, darkness, and brutal. William Golding tries to make you as a reader fell bad for the Kids because their airplane got shot down and they are now forced to survive on the island by themselves with no parental supervision. This is where the tone sadness comes into play. On the island when savagery takes over there are many moments where it is dark and brutal, which i think Golding wants us to understand. He wants to show how this was a tough time and it was brutal for the boys. Simon and Piggy both die which is brutal, and shows the dark sides of the people who killed them.
Symbols - The conch - The conch symbolizes civilization. It is used to bring all the boys together on the island. Whoever is using it gets to speak. The conch is used to call meetings. It later loses its power when piggy dies and drops the conch shattering into a million pieces.
Signal Fire - The signal fire represents safety. The signal fire is used to attrack people on the Pacific ocean who are passing by. There goal is to use the signal fire so they can get rescued. The fire does eventually die out and the boys forget about it showing that savagery has taken over. A fire does influence the naval officer to come, but it was because of the fire Jack set to try and get rid of Ralph.
The beast - The beast is not any given one person but it is something within everybody on the island. Simon finds this out when he finds the lord of the flies. The beast represent the savages that everybody has turned into.
Ralph and Jack - He symbolizes order. He is the one who tries to get rescued, and he does what is necessary to get saved. He wants to build a civilization and keep the island calm. He is the leader. He is unlike Jack who symbolizes who represents savagery and power. He becomes a savage during the book and tries to take control over the boys. He puts the face paint on showing he is a savage. He does this when he goes hunting.

Characterization - Piggy - can best be described as a static character who keeps his ego during the book. Piggy is a smart, but thick - fat English boy. He represents ego because he is true to himself and does not become a savage like Jack. Piggy being smart helps the boys on the island.
