He knows that this is what needs to be done. Robert shows that he is even more of a man when he has to take care of the family when his dad passes away. Another part of the Shaker religion is education. In the book Robert gets a D in English. He doesn't really understand it, and has to be tutored from Aunt Matty. Also another part in the book that shows Shakers weren't taught basic concepts of English was that Haven couldn't sign his own name. As a shaker he wasn't taught how to he has to teach himself. As a shaker it was known that usually worked on the farm instead of going to school.

As seen by Haven she was not good for anything because she could not do what they wanted her to do. This shows how a good beginning leads to a sad ending.
Symbols 1.) Havens signature - His signature symbolizes the fact that the Shaker religion did not have a good education. It shows that he did not know how to write his name. Instead he always had to but an X. Haven wanted Robert o learn for the fact that some day he could vote. He wanted him to be able to sign his name. They showed how they were golden and dark brown, meaning that they had been used a lot over the years.
Tone 1.) - Cheerful - In the book Robert is a very cheerful person. He does not really let other things bother him. He is always having a positive attitude and doing what is asked of him. In the book Robert is never really sad or down on himself. His character is optimistic. He sees the positive in the future. He looks at life in a good way, even though his family does not have much, and they are pretty poor. They have to work for what they have but Robert does not care, he knows it has to be done.
Tone 2.) - Sad - Even though Robert is an overall positive and cheerful person there comes a time when he is sad. When pinky has to be butchered, this is a sad moment for him. Funeral - Robert goes into the town of Learning to tell about the passing of his father. Him and his mom have a small funeral for his dad. He says some quick words about his father, then his dad is lowered into the ground.
Characterization 1.) - Robert - Dynamic - He is a dynamic character because he goes from the transition from a young boy to a young man. Over the course of the book he changes. He starts off a young farm boy, but as time passes he encounters many hardships that force him to his manhood. His first encounter is when he was willing for his dad to kill Pinky so the family could have some meat to survive. As Haven says to Robert " That's what being a man is all about, boy. It's about doing what's got to be done." Haven is referring to the killing of Pinky. Robert becomes even more of a man when his dad passes away. He now has to pick up where his dad left off. He has to take care of the family, and the livestock. These two instances in the book make Robert realize he had to do what was right. He overcame these hardships which characterizes him as dynamic.
2.) - Haven Peck - Dynamic - Haven is a pig butcher. Once Robert gets Pinky as a gift from Mr. Tanner he could have just killed her, because he kills pigs for a living. Instead I think Haven is a dynamic character because he does not kill her, instead he helps Robert and the pig. He had no intentions of killing her, instead he makes a corncrib, that takes up a lot of his time. Over time he changes from killing pigs, to helping them. I also think that when Haven kills Pinky at the end of the book, I do not think he wanted to. He had to, he still showed change overall. I also think Haven is a dynamic character because he is a hard worker, and worked until the day he died. He never gave up and helped his family tremendously.
3.) Roberts Mom - Static - Mrs. Peck is a very static character because she does not change over time. Over the course of the book she takes care of the chores inside. She kind of treats Rob like a little boy and is not involved much in the book. She does not make any major changes that would make her a dynamic character.
4.) Mr. Tanner - Round - I think Mr. Tanner is a round character because he has a complex personality. He is hardworking, rewarding, understanding, nice, and helpful. All these words I think can be used to describe Benjamin Tanner. He is a very hardworking man. Once Robert helped him give birth to Bob and Bib he was rewarding by giving Robert the pet pig. He also is helpful and nice in the aspect of letting Robert go to the Rutland fair with him and his wife. He was nice for letting him go, he did not have to let him go but he understand that it is his dream to go someday. It was Mr. Tanner who won Pinky the blue ribbon. Without letting Rob go Pinky would not have won the ribbon. Overall Mr. Tanner is a very unique character.
5.) - Aunt Carrie - static - Aunt Carrie is like another mother figure to Robert. She gives Robert 10 cents when he goes to the Rutland fair. Just like Robs mom she does chores in the house, but does not really change over time. She basically stays the same person. She is not a major character like Robert or Haven. She is a minor character who helps move the story along. She moves the story along by giving Rob the 10 cents. Once he is at the Rutland fair he has to buy soap because Pinky got all muddy. Without the 10 cents from Aunt Carrie he would not have been able to clean Pinky up , or win the blue ribbon.
Picture Method - Chapter 1
2.) - Haven Peck - Dynamic - Haven is a pig butcher. Once Robert gets Pinky as a gift from Mr. Tanner he could have just killed her, because he kills pigs for a living.
