Chapter 1 - Picture Method
1.) This picture reminds me of old Major telling the other animal his speech, and about the dream that he had encountered the previous day on the farm. He talks to them about "Animalism" and how they should be treated better on the farm.
2.) This picture perfectly represents Benjamin the Donkey. He is a character who is mentioned in this chapter that stands out to me. He was the oldest animal on the farm, and the worst tempered. He barely talked, but when he did it was to make a smart remark. He is a very interesting character in this book where everybody seems to have a good attitude on the farm.
3. This picture shows what Mr. Jones is like. He is the owner of the Manor Farm. He has a very bad drinking problem. When the animals are singing Beast of England it wakes the old grumpy man. He grabs his gun and shoots at the barn. The animals scurry back to their places. This man can usually be seen drunk by all the animals.
Predict - 1.) Old Major will end up dying because of his old age.
2.) Mr. Jones will get taken away from the farm because he is always drunk. He might go to jail.
3.) A new farmer will take over the Manor farm.
4.) The animals will get treated better. They will get more food, and have to work less.
Clarify - Everything in this chapter makes sense.
1.) It makes sense why old Major wanted to rebel against Mr. Jones. He wanted a better life for the animals, he didn't want them to suffer any longer.
2.) Usually you wouldn't see animals talking but in this book it makes sense.
3.) It shows that George Orwell is going to make fun of people buy using certain characters in the book.
4.) The animals sing Beasts of England because it talks about rebellion and they are happy about it.
Try - Why is Benjamin the goat so quiet, and have a bad temper?
Why are all the animals referred to as "Comrades"?
What sparked Old Major's dream and speech?
Why does he feel that the animals should rebel?
What will happen if the animals do actually rebel?
Connections - Speeches can be very leading. I have herd speeches that have convinced me.
Hard workers like Boxer usually do better in life.
Music makes me excited just like the animals were about the Beast of England.
Summarize - This chapter starts off with old major calling all of the animals to the barn to deliver a speech, and to tell them about his dream. He suggest that they rebel against Mr. Jones. He talked about equality and how the animals are being used. The animals like what they hear and start to sing to the tunes of "The Beast of England". Mr. Jones hears this and takes a shot at the barn. The animals fled to their sleeping places. Chapter one is a great chapter and helps you understand the characters better, and also explains the problem that the animals are facing.
